Doc Abel was born and raised in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, to Abel Ramos Jr., a dedicated government employee, and Beatriz II Barroga, an overseas Filipino worker. He completed his elementary education at the Modern Learning Center of Iriga City, where he graduated as Class Valedictorian. For his secondary education, he attended Ateneo de Naga University High School and graduated with Academic Distinction.

Coming from humble roots, this probinsyano pursued higher education with determination, applying for financial aid and securing scholarships to support his college and medical school journey. He studied at Ateneo de Manila University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. He then pursued his Doctor of Medicine at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC), where he also completed his Post-Graduate Internship. During his years in UERMMMC, he became an active member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Medical Fraternity, serving as Grand Aesculapian in his junior year. Further honing his expertise, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from St. Jude College, Manila.

After successfully passing the Physician Licensure Examination, he returned to his home province to serve his community. He completed a rigorous five-year General Surgery Training Program with ACES–Bicol, an accredited surgical training consortium in Naga City between the Bicol Medical Center and Universidad de Sta. Isabel–Mother Seton Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He then pursued further specialization with a two-year Sub-Specialty Training in Surgical Oncology at the University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital.

Our Surgical Oncologist is board-certified in both General Surgery and Cancer Surgery, having successfully passed the written and oral examinations in these specialties. His primary fields of expertise include the management of solid tumors of the breast, thyroid, head and neck, esophago-gastric tract, skin, and soft tissues.

Doc Abel is a Diplomate of both the Philippine Board of Surgery and the Philippine Board of Surgical Oncology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Philippine College of Surgeons, the Philippine Society of General Surgeons, and the Surgical Oncology Society of the Philippines. He also holds professional memberships as an Associate Member of the Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Surgery and as a Member of the Philippine Association of Training Officers in Surgery.

An advocate of continuous surgical education, he has authored and co-authored several published and non-published case reports and research papers, and has presented in scientific conferences both locally and internationally. Throughout his surgical training, he gained extensive experience in both open and minimally invasive procedures for cancer and non-cancer related cases, under the mentorship of some of the country’s most respected surgical experts.

At present, Doc Abel serves as a Consultant in the Division of Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery at the Bicol Medical Center. He is also a Visiting Consultant in all major hospitals in Camarines Sur, where he continues to provide specialized care for patients with both complex and common surgical conditions.
